HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT and BIG BEN

Stand on the site of an original royal palace built by King Canute, later rebuilt by Edward the Confessor who also founded Westminster Abbey. The palace remained the royal residence until Henry VIII moved to Whitehall. Although the buildings have been burned and rebuilt several times through their history they have been the meeting place for Parliament for centuries. The tower of Big Ben is nearly 100 m tall and the clock dials 7 m across. The great bell weighs 13.5 tons and was cast in Whitechapel in 1858.
